The Bar Mitzvah
The Bar Mitzvah Movie features Robert, a young reformed Jewish boy growing up in the mid-1980s. This film is a family-friendly comedy that covers antisemitism, bullying, and non-acceptance.
Narrated by Robert’s older self, he tells of his trials and tribulations growing up in a family of seven and the pressure he faced while attending both public and religious school.
While attending public middle school, Robert faces backlash and judgment due to his religious beliefs. Similarly, Robert’s peers at religious school turn on him due to his non-Jewish mother.
Throughout the film, Robert must conquer three obstacles: studying for his Bar Mitzvah, confronting the school bully, and winning the heart of the girl he likes-who is, ironically, dating his bully.
This film alternates between Robert’s reality and daydreams; his daydreams consist of biblical stories that relate to his life. Each fantasy features people in his life and teaches him how to overcome his hindrances.
This heartwarming story drives the idea that everyone, regardless of their beliefs or background, deserves love and acceptance.
